I was on Pokerroad today for the first time in a while and found a thread which sort of intrigued me. Well actually it was a post by Barry Greenstein talkng about the over importance placed by people of mathematics in poker. This leads me to the question of the day from Adele which is,
Q….HOW IMPORTANT IS MATHS IN POKER???
FIRSTLY LETS NOT CONFUSE MATHS WITH STATISTICS SHALL WE. STATISTICS ARE VITALLY IMPORTANT IN POKER AND ESPECIALLY ONLINE POKER WHEREAS MATHEMATICS ARE NOT. OFTEN, THE EXTRA WORK THAT IS MADE BY PLAYERS TO ANALYSE CERTAIN SITUATIONS IS OF VERY LITTLE IMPORTANCE ABOVE THEORETICAL LEVEL
I AM NOT A MATHEMATICALLY ORIENTATED PLAYER MYSELF BUT I PRIDE MYSELF ON BEING ABLE TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS AND MAKE ACCURATELY SIZED BETS. BUT DESPITE THIS, I CERTAINLY DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANY PLAYER THAT THIS THEN GIVES THEM A JUSTIFIABLE REASON TO SIDE STEP THIS PART OF THE GAME. YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW POKER WORKS AT A THEORETICAL LEVEL AND UNDERSTANDING THE MATH IS A GOOD WAY TO THAT EVEN THOUGH MOST OF IT REALLY ISNT PRACTICAL IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE.
BUT STATISTICS ON THE OTHER HAND…….WELL…..YOU LIVE AND DIE BY YOUR LEVEL OF INFORMATION IN POKER.
Played another heads up session last night and won $421……did my usual hit and run which should upset a few people. 2009 is still going very well and to say that I am chuffed to bits after last year is the understatement of the year so far. The thing that I hated most about last year was in having to put a front on to people as if everything was going OK when it wasnt…..I hated that.
Will be writing more articles for Flush Magazine so keep a look out for that as its a decent magazine. By the way, I am not using my new Poker Office 5 software in the heads up games and I am basically playing by my ear which isnt a bad way to play. Won almost $1000 this week playing heads up so I think that its time to quit and shift sites again……sorry boys.
